The big 3 upgrade?

How hard is this upgrade? Is this upgrade capable of being done without going to a shop? I want to purchase a HO alternator from eBay from a reliable source which I've heard of called Irragi alternators. I know what the big three means and it requires the upgrade of the following three power/ground cables which are the power wiring from the battery to the alternator, the ground from the battery to the chassis, and the ground strap to the engine/tranny to the chassis. How hard is it to change an alternator from a car and also the difficulty of upgrading the big 3?The big 3 upgrade?
You can also just add to the existing factory wiring for the big 3 instead of replacing. Use the stock wires for the correct lengths needed for each.

Aternators only need a properly adjusted tension on the belt to work properly.

Difficulty is dependant on the design of the car.The big 3 upgrade?
depending on the car it could be fairly easy or hard

  • 1989 Mercury Tracer?

My belts are tight, but they do show dry rot How do I change the Alternator %26amp; Power Steering belts on a 1989 Mercury Tracer. Nobody will touch it %26amp; to take it to a shop they want $250.00 just to change the belts. (my cost $15.00 for the belts). Also, the Alternator needs to be changed- any tips on how to do that?

    Thanks.1989 Mercury Tracer?
Your best bet would be to get the Haynes manual for your car... it would be tough to give you step by step directions on here. You can get the manual at most any auto parts store... $15, and now you'll have it for any future projects.

    - Good Luck!1989 Mercury Tracer?
I had one of those it sucked!!!1989 Mercury Tracer?
Unless you have a good set of wrenches as well as a 1/2 inch drive socket set with the right sizes to fit the nuts and bolts, you can't do the job yourself. You will also need someone to lever the pump and alternator and hold it tight while you tighten the bolts. The job can be dangerous if you don't disconnect the battery properly and if it's required to get under a jacked up vehicle at any time. To get an idea of the cook book steps that would need to be followed for your car, go to the public library and read the Motors and Chilton's manuals for the repair. Also buy a http://www.haynes.com manual for your car.

The gas dial on my 98 malibu is below the stop. how do i fix that.?

i recently changed the alternator and had to disconnect my battery. after installing the new alternator i started the car and my gas gage was below e. it is stuck under the stop that it rests on when the car is off. when i start the car it springs up to the stop so it looks like the car is always out of gas. is there a way that i can fix this problem. i am not good with math and figuring out how much gas i have by way of how many miles i went is too much calculating. The gas dial on my 98 malibu is below the stop. how do i fix that.?
You need to have it replaced. It sounds like it spun all the way around and ended up under the stop. Possible a tension spring has sprung inside the gauge. That means you may have to get a replacement cluster. Contact you local Chevy dealer to find out the proper procedures. Possible cost for a cluster? $200-$300? Plus the labor to remove and replace it---$90? Just giving ballpark figures so you know what you may be getting to.The gas dial on my 98 malibu is below the stop. how do i fix that.?
honestly, you'd have to disassemble the cluster, open the gauge, and unstick it. (I know, not the answer you wanted)The gas dial on my 98 malibu is below the stop. how do i fix that.?
the first answer you got is right.you can take a cluster out and remove the front lense.unstuck the needle.I did it a bunch of times on a malibu.

This is to Lunatic72... I have no idea how to "let you know."?

Here's what's wrong with my car...the thermostat gets stuck. My heater, and I say that loosly, blows cold air almost all the time. When I slow down it blows cold air, when I turn the amount of heat that is suppose to blow from low to high it blows cold air. It will blow slighly warm air only if I am going 60mph or greater and then only for a little while. May be 2 minutes. Then it blows cold again. Plus it doesn't blow very hard out of the vents. I was informed that it was the heating element. I'm guessing that the heating element and the heater core are the same thing? I can not afford to take it to a shop to fix and I do like to workon cars, I just don't have enough knowledge as to where and how to get to the heating element. I can take stuff off and put it back on that's not a problem. I have replaced alternators, changed spark plugs and I change my own oil. Plus I have put a starter on my dune buggie. So I'm not a complete idiot. But this heating element is getting the best of me.This is to Lunatic72... I have no idea how to %26quot;let you know.%26quot;?
Start by replacing your thermostat... if it's sticking... your coolant never stays in the engine block long enough to get any form of heat from it... and without hot coolant flowing through your heater core... the fan will just blow cold. Thermostat is cheap and easy... start there for sure. This is to Lunatic72... I have no idea how to %26quot;let you know.%26quot;?
try putting a higher temp. thermostat in. then check your fresh air intake and make sure there are no leaves or debris blocking it. As for the heater core, get ready to tear your dash half out to get to it. What kind of car? This is to Lunatic72... I have no idea how to %26quot;let you know.%26quot;?
Like dr. deviance said, start with the easy cheap stuff like the thermostat. If its sticking thats a big part of why not not getting heat. And I was stating you could email me andlet me know all of this. What year, make and model is this car? This is to Lunatic72... I have no idea how to %26quot;let you know.%26quot;?
Before changing anything, backflush the heater core. I thought my problem was the thermostat also but after fiddling around I did the flush. Easy enough to do. Take the heater core lines off of the engine and flush it with a garden hose. If you are not sure which one is the inlet and outlet, put the garden to both lines. Especially if its the GM red coolant. That will crystalize and gel up in the heater core. If that doesnt do it, then I would change thermostat before the heater core. This is to Lunatic72... I have no idea how to %26quot;let you know.%26quot;?
i say again...shop manual..15 dollars...pays 4 itself...over n over....step by step on every job u do.. lists what tools needed..no one sez element...heater core will get less laughs...before u do anything are you really really really sure its the core????.. change thermostate,,flush system...flush heater core both directions seperatly...[where hoses go into engine fire wall]. refill 50/50 coolant/water....check heat door is working... we need more mechanic girls..good luckThis is to Lunatic72... I have no idea how to %26quot;let you know.%26quot;?
You can pick up a good clue about this by feeling the heater hoses for temperature. That will show if hot coolant is entering the cab.If the line is hot near the engine but cooler away from it,something isn't letting it flow.Another possibility is an air lock in the system which can happen if it's been opened for some reason.I'm sure you know this already, but to be sure the coolant level is right, take off the radiator cap with the engine cool and top off the radiator. The first thing that happens when the coolant is low will be the heater acting up as you describe. This is to Lunatic72... I have no idea how to %26quot;let you know.%26quot;?
your heater core is fine as long as you don't see water leaking on the passenger side floor, forget about the heater core, you need to put a new thermostat in the engine and if it doesn't fix the problem you need to look at the heater controls and make sure the duct doors are opening properly.

1994 Honda Accord 5 speed turns and but shuts off soon after.?

my '94 Accord will turn on after i turn the ignition over so many times. it just clicks when i turn the key, eventually turning on. when its on, the rpm's will go so high, but will slowly drop until the car just shuts off altogether. and while its on, it will make a sort of broken putter.

i have had the battery charged twice in 3 weeks, and so im leaning toward the possibility of the alternator being the problem. if that is the case, how much would it be to have the alternator changed in a shop?

however, friends have suggested it either being the starter or a fuel pump.

    does anyone have any ideas?

thank you very much.1994 Honda Accord 5 speed turns and but shuts off soon after.?
put a fuel pressure guage on the line and check the psi, also make sure ur gettign spark by grounding a spark plug to a ground on the car using a screw driver. I suggest you take it to a mechanic for them to look at it hands on,1994 Honda Accord 5 speed turns and but shuts off soon after.?
sorry to tell you go to a shop you have more then the alt bad and if you don't it will nickel and dime you to death

Do you need to take the pully off to change the bearings in an alternator? If so options on how to do that.?

Yes you do because the bearings sits on the front housing of the alternator. You are wasting your time. It is better to just get a new or rebuilt one instead of going through all the hassle of taking the alternator apart. If you still want to do it, you will need a allen wrench and an impact gun and a puller.Do you need to take the pully off to change the bearings in an alternator? If so options on how to do that.?
Yes you do if you wish to attempt that which I would suggest you don't try if your only reason is to save money. You will only destroy what you have , ruin the core value and end up paying for a replacement and a useless bearing on top of it.

If you are just trying to fill an afternoon with a learning project, go for it.Do you need to take the pully off to change the bearings in an alternator? If so options on how to do that.?
Yes, then you got to press the shaft out and then press the bearing out. sometimes it`s cheaper to go the route of bearing replacement but sometimes i just buy a new one cause of the pain.Do you need to take the pully off to change the bearings in an alternator? If so options on how to do that.?
you can't change the bearings, and brushes, internal voltage regulator and time for the price of swapping it out with a rebuilt one.Do you need to take the pully off to change the bearings in an alternator? If so options on how to do that.?
You need to remove belt do not take it all the way off just enough to remove alternator and I hope you know what you are doing I use to re build them long time ago before they became modern but I still have the charm to build from scratch, Hope this helps,

  • My car will start and work for ahout one hour until the battery is dead.I changed the battery and alternator.?

I have a Toyota corolla station wagon 1990 and when I start the car it will work for about an hour until the battery is dead. I will recharge the battey the same thing will happen so I put in new the battery and a recondition alternator and the samething thing happens as before.

Is it the alternator not charging the battery? How about running a direct connection from the alternator to the battery? Is that possobile? Is there any device /modulator that it has to pass through before it reaches the battery?

Will a direct connection damage my battery and alternator? The recondition alternator has a 3 prong plug and two of the wires are slightly thicker than the one that was on the old alternator. The connecction I did was the same as the old oneMy car will start and work for ahout one hour until the battery is dead.I changed the battery and alternator.?
check your alternator and battery for loose cables. make sure the terminals on the battery properly secured and not able to slip.

for the alternator, check the cables and make sure each bolt is tightened to it's maximum. My car will start and work for ahout one hour until the battery is dead.I changed the battery and alternator.?
Check to see if the batt has a dead cell (even though its new) and check if the alt is putting out. If u dont know how to do this or have a tester on hand go to ur local autoparts store and have them test it for you. If its no that u may have a short sumwhere draining ur batt. Also check ur grounds and make sure they are clean that causes probs also.My car will start and work for ahout one hour until the battery is dead.I changed the battery and alternator.?
Well, I haven't really had much experience with Jap. Cars, but most modern vehicles will have a regulating swich soewhere between the alternator and the redirect cable. Also, Check the cables themselves. A faulty cable could mean that the full current is not getting back to the battery. Anyways, like i said, I am more familiar with American makes, But there should be some similarity. My car will start and work for ahout one hour until the battery is dead.I changed the battery and alternator.?
check the cables for any bare spots. might be grounding out.My car will start and work for ahout one hour until the battery is dead.I changed the battery and alternator.?
sounds like a wiring problem, however, have that alternator checked. new just means new it doesnt necessarily mean good. if it is , in fact, good have a competent mechanic check it out.My car will start and work for ahout one hour until the battery is dead.I changed the battery and alternator.?
i own a repair shop and the alternator is what regulates the voltage also on this one,it sounds like to me you have completely lost the ground wire from the body to the battery, and all its doing is running on battery voltage ,and not allowing the alternator to charge it back up,one thing you said that helped was it does this with both battery's and alternators ,so if i was you id be looking for a bad or loose ground wire from the body to the engine ,they have a lot of ground wires on them, and all of them are needed,i hope you find it,they can be hard to find when their doing this, good luck with it.My car will start and work for ahout one hour until the battery is dead.I changed the battery and alternator.?
Alternator Voltage Regulator is probably bad. You can buy them at auto-part store. This part basically controls the output of the alternator. For example, when the battery is charged the regulator will restricted the amount of amperage from the alternator allowing just enough to keep the car running. Most new vehicle have the regulator built in to the alternator. In your case they are two separate parts.

You can test to see if the alternator is working by disconnecting on of the battery terminals while the car is running, if the alternator and the regulator is good the car should stay running. If it dies the one of them is bad. Sometimes there are problems with recondition parts, so the alternator could still be bad. I don't think it is you battery, if it was the car would not ever die as long as it is running. My car will start and work for ahout one hour until the battery is dead.I changed the battery and alternator.?
The first thing I would try is putting a volt meter on the battery while the car is running. The battery should run just above 12 volts not running and around 13 to 15 running. While the car is running, if it doesnt read 13 to 15 its your alternator. I have purchased new remaned ones that were still bad. I would also check battery connections, broken wires , and ground cable to frame connection. My car will start and work for ahout one hour until the battery is dead.I changed the battery and alternator.?
new does not mean good. replace the alternatorMy car will start and work for ahout one hour until the battery is dead.I changed the battery and alternator.?
allso check the fuse that goto the battery or retest alt it might be falty diodes or brushes

Dose anyone know how much it !?

    if that's a antique i'm sure i will cost a bunch

lol at first i thought you were somehow still driving some useless hunk of old car junk yard trash.Dose anyone know how much it !?
You will need to contact an auto repair shop to get an estimate.Dose anyone know how much it !?
Around 150 dollars for the part and about 50 dollars for the labor at a reputable shop. If you don't know a shop you trust in your area check here: http://www.cartalk.com/content/mechx/Dose anyone know how much it !?
Shouldn't cost you but somewhere around 100 to 125 bucks. The alternator can be had for around 40 to 80 bucks depending on where you buy it. (AutoZone) The rest will be labor.

My friend has a 1997 GMC Jimmy and she has had alot of problems with it so my question is?

The battery keeps dying out, and she has changed the alternator about 4 times and someone told her that it may be her computer chip. Does anyone know if it could be that? If so how much it would cost to replace. She also has replaced the battery several times and it was sitting for approx. 5 years and we bought a battery and it started right up. But the battery will only run for a minute. Thank You TracyMy friend has a 1997 GMC Jimmy and she has had alot of problems with it so my question is?
Don't ever buy a cheap battery, this is the main problem for most vehicles.

Yeah a cheap battery will work for a few weeks even months.

Then it's back to the same old problem.

I would try this first. Get a good battery with the most cranking amps you can get for your vehicle.

A well known name brand, not some name you never heard of.My friend has a 1997 GMC Jimmy and she has had alot of problems with it so my question is?
If it starts right up and then the battery is the only thing keeping it running...Meaning the alternator is not charging it up.The voltage regulator may be bad. I would take it to a Napa , Advance auto parts or an Auto zone and get them to put their Charging system tester on it. They will diagnose it for free because they want you to by the part from them. If the computer is bad they can also put a scanner on it and tell you if there is a possible bad computer. they will also do that check for free also.

Since your truck is manufactured after 1996 they should have the OBD2 connector to check it with.My friend has a 1997 GMC Jimmy and she has had alot of problems with it so my question is?
Oh good Lord, don't ever take your car to a parts store for service and diagnostics!! Yeah, ok, maybe for the battery or the alternator, but even then they try to sell you every little gadget part for putting in a new battery. They can tell you if your battery is dead, or your alternator is charging, but all they can tell you about your computer is if it has any diagnostic codes stored in it's memory. that's it. It is well known in the automotive community that GM alternators are not known for lasting the life a gm car. I know, I've put 4 on my gm car. The reason the battery keeps dying out is that there is probably a parasitic draw on it. Some electrical component is staying %26quot;awake%26quot; while the key is shut off. To determine if you have a parasitic draw on the battery, you need to disconnect the negative battery cable and install a parasitic test switch. This allows you to run the vehicle and operate all of the accessories and other electrical components in normal fashion, then open the switch and connect an ammeter to measure the current draw on the battery. It's better this way versus just disconnecting the battery and hooking up an ammeter in series because some electrical components will have a higher draw when the battery is first connected then when they power down, or go to sleep, the draw drops off. If you don't drive the vehicle after disconnecting the battery, some components may not effectively go to sleep. To determine the allowable parasitic draw on a battery, determine the reserve capacity of the battery and divide by 4. Example: a battery with a reserve capacity of 100 minutes will have an allowable parasitic draw of 25 miliamps. It is possible for a computer to draw excessive current and drain the battery. Typically, anything over 50 milliamps will draw a battery down over a week. You should take the vehicle to a reputable repair facility and have them test the entire electrical system. Load test the battery to determine the battery's state of charge, load test the alternator to determine if it is charging properly, perform a parasitic load test on the battery to check for unwanted current draw on the battery. Also check the battery cables for corrosion and high resistance, and loose connections. I know of several people who have had to replace the alternator many times on their vehicle. You can do like I did and buy an alternator that has a lifetime warranty against failure. This way if it fails again, you will only have to pay for labor to have it installed. On this vehicle, that is not very much because it is easily accessible.

Can anyone tell me how to change the water pump/alternator belt on a 1977 280z (datsun)?

Hello Miss Shelly.Since you are asking it seems that you are going to attempt this your self.I suggest U buy a repair manual(Chilton's or Haynes for about $16.00 @ most parts stores) Anyway if your Datsun only has one belt,it's as easy as loosening the alternator screw %26amp; the mounting screw.(at the bottom).

    Changing Generator to Alternator?

I have a 1962 model Zepher Zodiac, and I would like to know how do I go about changing my charging circuit from DC to AC. Thank you in advance.

If I can get diagrams or links i would gladly appreciate it.Changing Generator to Alternator?
You can't charge a DC battery with AC. You have to convert(rectify) the AC to make DC, which charges the battery.

If your car isn't charging while idling, you need a different(better) alternator, or something else is going on. Somewhere(maybe in the alternator itself) you will have a rectification circuit which takes your AC and converts it to DC. Maybe one of the diodes is bad, making for a serious losses in energy in your DC circuit.

At any rate, if your car isn't charging sufficiently as-is, you're not going to get better performance by converting a faulty DC level back to AC, rectify it AGAIN and then charge your battery with it. You just introduced more losses by converting it AGAIN.Changing Generator to Alternator?
    my dear realtor:

in the houses is a lot better ac than dc.

not in cars ,my dear.Changing Generator to Alternator?
The most common method is to install an one wire GM internal reg. alternator.

You can get one wire kits at auto parts stores to convert a regular 3 wire GM internal reg. alternator. ( 70s - 80s vintage stuff from any GM car engine )Changing Generator to Alternator?
of course, the bigger question is WHY.

An alternator will produce AC current, but every single auto accessory known to man runs on DC.

Unless you plan to bring your household appliances into the back seat to plug in?

You can change the generator to an alternator, but meantime your distributor, brake lights, etc. all need DC so that Alternator usually has a built in converter to change it all back to DC anyway.

So... back to my original question.... why? If you need AC power for some reason, why not simply purchase an inverter and wire that into your system?

  • My car lights go down when the sound its high?!?

i got two amps, 4 components and a kicker 12, whenever i put them to sound very loud the lights goes like down with every beat, but today some guy on a car sound store told me that i need to buy a new car battery, a bigger one, because that might damage all the electrical system...

this is true?? then only with a battery will work? or i need to change the alternator to? or just leave that how it is??My car lights go down when the sound its high?!?
battery isn't the problem. when the engine is running, the alternator supplies electrical power for the vehicle. yours, by the way, isn't putting out enough power. get a larger oneMy car lights go down when the sound its high?!?
replacing the battery is the best option. but if your lights are only dipping a little then you cold purchase a capacitor from any car audio retailor. what it does is hen the sub hits and needs more power it takes it from the cap instead of the car and taking to much power. My car lights go down when the sound its high?!?
    it may be the wiring...

before buying a new battery or alternator, i would check all the wiring.

    check grounds, fuses, connections, etc.

its not worth it to find out its not the battery or alternator after paying for it.

    good luck

How does a 'Single-Line Alternator' work, and is it necessarily beneficial?

I have one on my 67' Mustang and I have to screw in a connector to the battery terminal if I want to start it (I leave it unscrewed when not driving it for a while). It gets really hot and I'm pretty sure battery acid may be leaking. I'm wondering if I should change to a regular alternator. How does a %26039;Single-Line Alternator%26039; work, and is it necessarily beneficial?
A sinlge wire alternator, and a regular alternator are really the same thing. A %26quot;regular%26quot; alternator has the output wire and then another 2 wire plug. One of these is pulsed output that can actually be converted to drive a tach, and the other is the field activation wire. This typically runs up to a 10 amp (or so) fuse, and then to the ignition switch. Thus this only %26quot;activates%26quot; the alternator when the key is on.

To convert a %26quot;regular%26quot; alternator to a single wire alternator, you simply jump the field activation wire to the output wire (which has battery voltage).

The field activation does draw some current. If this vehicle is not a daily driver, then it will tend to discharge a battery. Just be advised that to convert to a %26quot;regular%26quot; alternator you must run a fused ignition voltage wire to the alternator (i.e. you can't just bolt it on and expect it to work).

It's pretty old has 198k mi and won't keep a charge, i'm assuming it's the alternator, before i change it though i'm going to check all of my fuses, but just so i know, how much would a (probably) rebuilt one cost, if i did the labor? If you can get your hands on a multimeter check and make sure. The battery should be at 14+ volts when running.

The contour is not fun, i have done one once, and if i remember you have to go in from the bottom. Transverse mount is always a lot of fun.How do i replace/ how much is an alternator in a 1995 ford contour GL?
a rebuilt alt is about 100 to 130.00 and is under the car..it involves taking out the inner fender splash shield and other things...i know the main wire that go to it rub on the firewall brace and can short out ...you also have a fusible link located at the rear of the motor near the top it could be bad...anyway follow your battery cable to find the fusible link to see if its bad or corroded u need a test lite to see if power is coming through...anyway a mechanic shop will charge the hour diagnostic and then fix it at the cost of 350.00 to 450.00

How to change air condition and alternator belts on 98 dodge neon?

BPSKI is wrong. The 98 has two belts regardless if it is a DOHC engine or a SOHC engine. You first need to take off the power steering belt, there is a ideler pulley that you can release tension on and that belt will come off. Then loosen the alternator and that belt will come off. Reverse the process and bam done..How to change air condition and alternator belts on 98 dodge neon?
It only has 1 belt that's called a serpentine belt it turns all the pulleys you can purchase a repair manual at auto parts like auto zone depending what part of the country you live

Its almost the same thing except it first produces alternating electricity and then rectifies it to dirct electricity and pumps it in thru the battery. The alternator has the voltage regulator internally so U dont need an external one.

The alternator is located neck to the fire wall. You may hap to take top engine month so you can pull the engine to the front of the vehicle. It easy to get out once you do that. Just unhook the battery so you don't short any thing out. You can flower the belt around to it. Make you to move the tenner off the belt so you can take it off the alternator. Leave the belt in place. The routing of the belt has to be right to run right and to get back on the alternator.

How to change a 1996 Audi A4 alternator?

I don't really know that much about cars but my car died the other day and I think something is wrong with either the battery or the alternator. How do I remove the alternator correctly? And about how much would a new one cost? And do I have to buy an alternator for an Audi or can it just be any kind?

One more thing... is an alternator easy to install? Like can I do it myself or should I take it to a shop and have mechanic do it?How to change a 1996 Audi A4 alternator?
I would strongly advise you take it to a professional. There is VERY little you can do on these cars yourself. Sorry, but if you attempt to fiddle with it, you will probably create more problems than you fix, and your repair bill will go up accordingly.

You will probably be looking at a bill of around $700-$800, if the alt is the problem.

Always disconnect the negative battery terminal before doing any work on the electrical system. Remove the serp belt with a long 0 offset wrench. Then lift the car safely on a hoist, remove the belly pan, wires and air duct. Remove the 2 bolts attaching the generator the bracket, and pull it out from the bottom.

You should use only a Bosch alternator, which will probably run you $400-$600. Call Carquest to find one.

BTW, what leads you to believe that alternator is bad?

  • How do you know when its time to change your spark plugs or alternator?

on a 2004 grand am i haven't change them ever since i pruchase the car in 2005.How do you know when its time to change your spark plugs or alternator?
With spark plugs, normally your gas mileage starts to decline and when taking off, it is getting sluggish. Or you can always check them, if the gap is big and they are black and corroded. Normally change them every 15,000 miles, but check them first. Your alternator, well since it keeps your battery powered (generator), all the things that are run by your battery (lights, radio, other electrical devices). Lights seem dim or your car will hard to crank over other things such as that. How do you know when its time to change your spark plugs or alternator?
When the alternator is about to go out, your AC, radio, gears with go on and off, car will go in and out of gear like it's dying then coming back to life.

Spark plugs? It's hard to say. But they're cheap to replace and improve MPG, so do it every few years.

on a 2004 grand am i haven't change them ever since i pruchase the car in 2005.How do you know when its time to change your spark plugs or alternator?
Now would be a good time to change out your spark plugs. Every 3 years is rather standard.

Alternator on the other hand, That is one of those things you don't replace it unless its broken! So long as your battery is still charging its still working fine. Your alternator should last at least 10 more years.

Does any one know anything about Voltage Regulator Instrument custer? wiring?

Ok my alternator is not charging my battery on my 1976 ford maverick. changed the alternator, the regulator and the wires that come from the two still not charging the better has been tested to its good. they said it may be Voltage Regulator Instrument custer harness? does any one know anything about this or know where i could get diagram showing me how to hook this up?Does any one know anything about Voltage Regulator Instrument custer? wiring?
Yes I can get you that thru scanning the photo copied sheets from the Mitchell Manual,,, it will give you the printed copper circuit board sheet layout labeled with all the connections...

I also can get you all the bumper to bumper diagrams for the car and the alternator/regulator testing verification info...

although most starting charging system headahe problems can be traced out to simple things like battery terminal posts adn ends not being clean enough or cables being bad or having bad connections etc.

BTW are you using the bolt on terminals by any chance that came in a 2 pack from the auto parts store that have the redd paint on one and black paint on the other???

If so that paint is plasticized and insulates against proper voltage tranfer... in 1995 I repaired a Ford Pick up in Nampa Idaho....

the Mexican owner had a Brand New Battery, New Starter, New Alternator, New Voltage Regulator %26amp; New Cables... %26amp; these New Terminals too...

It would crank over but not start...

I took the terminals off and looked where the wire sat solid paint...

then I took them and save them for the customer...

then got plain lead unpainted terminals and installed them...

vehicle now started and also charged correctly...

I charged him $12.00 parts and labor (our shop rate was $42 hr)

He gladly paid it happy truck was fixed when I tried to tell him it was just those stupid painted terminals he called me a liar and left in a huff..

    Is my alternator dead?

hey i have a 91 acura gs. Sometimes when i don't start it for two days, it doesn't want to start anymore (unless i use a jump cable), and when i start it and don't move for too long (stand still), the battery seems to become weak, and the car dies (then i need to jump cable it to restart). If i drive, it seems that my car works fine. could it be my alternator? or my battery? but the thing is that i changed my alternator and my battery 7 months ago. i know that sometime that alternator can be defective. 7 months ago, when i changed my alternator, one of my friend did it for me, so i just bought the alternator. i was wondering how much it will cost me it i take it too a garage if the cause of the problem is the alternator. tks for any helps. Is my alternator dead?
IT IS NOT UR BATTERY....ITS EITHER UR ALTERNATOR OR UR BATTERY TERMINALS ARE CORRODED

CHECK THE TERMINALS FIRST AND IF THEY ARE JUST GET THEM CLEANED BUT IF NOT IT IS UR ALTERNATORIs my alternator dead?
to check the alternator pull the positive terminal off with it running if the car stalls the alt is bad. if not its working. sounds like the battery is shot and if you've run it dead enough times that's probably why. it should still be under warranty after only 7 months take it back they should test it and replace it if it's bad for free. also check and clean all the terminal connections on the battery and alt.Is my alternator dead?
you need to take the alternator to the auto parts store. they will check it for free. also take your battery. and you can decide from there what you will need.Is my alternator dead?
    Probably the battery..

Take it to almost any auto parts

store or Wal Mart and they will

test both the battery and alternator

    for free...Is my alternator dead?
yep sounds like the alternator also check ur battery cables and grounds. Is my alternator dead?
    It's a crappy battery.Is my alternator dead?
First make sure your connections are tight and clean. A battery brush costs a few dollars at a parts store, use it to clean the terminals and posts to shiny metal.

Use a multimeter to check the voltage before you start it, it should be around or slightly over 12v. A cheap multimeter can be had at Wal -Mart for $20.

After starting the car, the alternator should be charging the battery at 14.5 volts or pretty close to that. If it's only charging at 12 volts, it is a defective alternator, or voltage regulator. It could also be a poor connection.

Drive the car with the meter hooked up to the cigarette lighter port. (Get help for this one) If the car isn't charging but suddenly kicks in while driving then either the alternator is bad or the circuit that activates the alternator is bad.

DO NOT test the system by disconnecting the battery cable with the car running! This worked in 1955 when cars had generators instead of alternators. On a modern car you stand a good chance of frying your computer and costing yourself a lot more money.

Many places will test your charging for free, but remember that they profit from a car that needs repair, so be cautious.

  • Mitshubishi Montero. How much would it cost to fix an oil leak?

The oil keeps leaking onto the alternator and then sucking out all the battery. I've changed the alternator 4 times..since i have lifetime warranty on it.. but i really need to get this oil problem fixed. I think i need to buy some gaskets. i wanted to get an idea of how much it would cost to fix the oil leak ( labor costs)so i dont get ripped off at the mechanics..since i really dont' have one that i go to regularly. Please Help me.Mitshubishi Montero. How much would it cost to fix an oil leak?
Where is the oil coming from? If it's coming from around the valve cover, it should be pretty cheap. Gaskets are probably like 20 bucks and if you are any good with tools you can fix it. If the oil leak is anywhere else, like around the oil pan or the front and rear seals, you will be looking at hundreds to fix. But from what you describe, it's coming from the valve cover gasket, unless your alternator is in a really strange spot.Mitshubishi Montero. How much would it cost to fix an oil leak?
That question really cant be answeered here.. It all depends on how honest the place you take it is.. I seen it cost 450, to find out..Once you get a leak unless you know something about cars they can reall rip you off.. Well its this or that you may need this or that... Oli leaks are the Mech dreams ... Get a friend that knows cars to look first. may just save you some money.....GOOD LUCK....RobMitshubishi Montero. How much would it cost to fix an oil leak?
You don't say how old the vehicle is or how many miles on the odometer. Have you checked to see if the repairs are covered under warranty.

An oil leak is an extremely uncommon problem these days. If a valve cover gasket needs replaced, the repairs could cost less than $200.00. If there is a cracked head or block, an engine rebuild might cost $3,000 to $4,000.

If you had alternator replacements done by a Mitsubishi dealer, you might want to consider trying another Mitsubishi dealer. There is the possibility the mechanic is tampering with the vehicle so he will get repeat work. That happened to me at a Dodge dealership.Mitshubishi Montero. How much would it cost to fix an oil leak?
my girl..you should be able to see exactly where the oil leak is coming from...have you tried your oil cap?...it sounds like that may be your problem..in any case the local rate here in Florida for a Mitsubishi dealer is average of 25$ per hour..i would know since i own a 3000gt Mitsi..dont let them take you for a ride..if you have the time, try a bunch of places that will take a look at your problem (without charging for it ) to get an informed idea on what the problem is..then go to the dealer an tell them what to do..you will save money that way and if you go there knowing what the problem is they wont take a chance trying to rape you of your money!

Respek and good luck sugar pie!

    CHANGING OUT ALTERNATOR 03 VETTE?

My alternator just died on my 2003 Vette. The past couple of days it has rained pretty hard here in southern california. My battery was diminishing little by little this past month and today it finally died while at the gas station.

I don't have the time or desire to take it into the shop let alone I don't want to pay out cash for something I can do myself. I am mechanically inclined and know how to turn wrenches the only problem im running into is i've never removed a serpentine belt on a corvette. I've had it for a little over 2years. Being late on a sunday, my resources were limited. Can someone walk me through the removal of the serpentine belt so that I can remove the alternator. I would really appreciated it.CHANGING OUT ALTERNATOR 03 VETTE?
your gonna love this belt system. locate tensioner, remove tension.that simple.just start looking, its an idler pulley with a springloaded arm.CHANGING OUT ALTERNATOR 03 VETTE?
first off should be 1/2 socket/wrench, grad a breaker bar your gonna need it. (although not to hard without, will make it a lot easier on you), the tensioner is going to be located below the alternator but above the crankshaft, bolt will rotate clockwise to release the tension. and you should be set to go...a little word of advice, i dont know how often you use the vehicle, or how hard you drive it, but if your getting around 10,000 might be just as easy to replace it while you have it off?

I just changed the alternator and battery on my 1966 Chrysler New Yorker and now it won't run?

I JUST REPLACED THE BATTERY AND THE ALTERNATOR BUT IT WON橳 RUN. THE BATTERY DIED ON ME AND IT SEEMED AS THOUGH IT NEEDED TO BE REPLACED BASED ON HOW OLD IT WAS SO I STARTED THERE. AFTER A FEW DAYS IT STARTED TO REPEAT HAVING A HARD TIME STARTING NEEDING A JUMP TO START SO I MADE THE NEXT MOVE TO REPLACE THE ALTERNATOR. WITH THE ALTERNATOR REPLACED AND ALL CONNECTIONS TO THE ALTERNATOR CLEANED, CONNECTIONS RESTORED IN CORRECT LOCATIONS AND CORRECT BELT TENSION I CANNOT GET IT TO STAY RUNNING. THE ENGINE TURNS OVER AND SOUNDS LIKE IT WANTS TO RUN BUT DIES WITHIN ABOUT 2 SECONDS. I CHARGED THE BATTERY AND TESTED THE VOLTAGE MAKING SURE IT GOT A FULL CHARGE BUT IT STILL WON橳 GO. I HAVE NOTICED THAT THE CLAMPS FOR THE BATTERY POSTS ARE A LITTLE COROADED SO THOSE ARE GETTING REPLACED ASAP AS WELL AS REPLACING THE VOLTAGE REGULATOR. ALSO, IT WONT START OFF OF A JUMP START... ANY OTHER SUGGESTIONS?I just changed the alternator and battery on my 1966 Chrysler New Yorker and now it won%26039;t run?
Voltage regulator is a possibility, it may not be allowing enough voltage through.

A weak condenser can certainly cause it to not run correctly, as can worn out points. They're usually sold as a set, so replace both at the same time.

Another item that can cause it to start and not keep running is the ignition ballast.

What's a ballast? you might be asking. It's a part of the points type ignition system that reduces the voltage to the coil to about 9 volts. Many had a bypass that allowed the full 12v to the coil during start-up for easier starts, some were temperature controlled where they allowed a full 12v to the coil, then once they started to warm up, the voltage would decrease, and they can get very hot.

The ballast will be mounted to the firewall, on my '65, it was near the center on the driver's side. It will be a ceramic block with a metal bracket to hold it onto the firewall, and a terminal on each side, one from the battery, and one to the coil. It should be easy to follow the wires to see where each one goes. You can test the ballast with a voltmeter to see if it's allowing voltage through, or an ohmmeter to see if it's reading a certain amount of ohms, or an open circuit. An open circuit means it's broken, of course, and needs replacing, if it allows anywhere from about 8v to 12v, it should be okay.

You'll probably need to learn how to set the points yourself since there's not too many technicians who know how to do that anymore (I've known a few who had never even heard of points before). Here's a link to an article explaining how on Allpar.com http://www.allpar.com/fix/points.htmlI just changed the alternator and battery on my 1966 Chrysler New Yorker and now it won%26039;t run?

sorta limited on info but 1966 new yorker im sure still has a points ignition system. these can be very picky to get right. i would take the dist cap off and sand the points or replace them (they're cheap). you will need to set them with a fealer guage.. good luck hope this helps

http://www.uartech.com/I just changed the alternator and battery on my 1966 Chrysler New Yorker and now it won%26039;t run?
gotta reset the alarm system/thats what is now shutting you DOWN/no points in that systemI just changed the alternator and battery on my 1966 Chrysler New Yorker and now it won%26039;t run?
It might be a bad ground. This might sound crazy but connect one side of your positive jumper cables to the connection on the starter and ground the negative side, then connect the other ends to your battery and try to start it. If it starts then it has to be the battery's ground or the connection to the starter.I just changed the alternator and battery on my 1966 Chrysler New Yorker and now it won%26039;t run?
If your '66 still has the original points and condensor distributor you may have a bad condensor and a bad condensor will perform as you have stated, poor running right up to the point of not starting at all. Or it's possible the points have slipped and are closed, gap between .014 - .019 ( I believe were the specs).

Chrysler Corp. replaced the old distributor for just that reason, reliability.I just changed the alternator and battery on my 1966 Chrysler New Yorker and now it won%26039;t run?
Check your points for burning and pitting, better yet, replace them and the condenser. Also could be the ignition ballast resistor. A symptom of a bad resistor is that the engine will start but as soon as you let go of the key, it dies. Check it with an ohmmeter. A bad one will read very high resistance, or infinity. It's mounted on the firewall, about 2-3 inches long, half inch thick, looks like a white crayon with a wire coming off each end. Chrysler products of the this vintage were notorious for burning these resistors out. Lots of owners used to carry a spare in their glovebox.I just changed the alternator and battery on my 1966 Chrysler New Yorker and now it won%26039;t run?

How do I clean the Fuel pump, filters and tank cleaning on a 95' plymouth neon?

I have a 95 plymouth neon that was sitting for about 6months. i recently bought it and changed the alternator. The car was running great i put fuel in it and gas line antifreeze. When i tried to start it this morning it would turn over but wouldnt run. A friend suggested that the gas that was in it could have been to old. and maybe clogged my fuel fliter or fuel pump... Is there anyway or any product to clean this tank, filters, and fuel pump. without replaceing them. How do I clean the Fuel pump, filters and tank cleaning on a 95%26039; plymouth neon?
you can add cleaners through the gas to clean it out but that may not get it started again, you may wind up having to replace the pump in it because once they been setting for a while sometimes they will go out and cause a lack of fuel to the engine,if it were me id check the pump pressure and also check the relay for it,before i pulled the tank off it,you cant really clean it out good without removing it,adding chemical cleaner to it only loosens up more junk and causes it to stop the strainer up more on it,there's also a fuse for the pump you need to check to make sure it hasn't blown on it,good luck with it.

I took it to an automotive electrician and they said they couldn't figure it out. Have you installed anything new and electrical? mine started after I put fog lights on my car. those two lights are only on when the alternator isn't charging properly so it sounds as though your alternator is going out, which is $100-$300 to replace don't go through a mechanic if all possible because they will charge you immensely to install it. its typically 2 or 3 bolts and shimmy it to loosen the belt off.HELP! some brake drums will come off easily by just wiggling it and some of them you have to loosen the adjuster or tapping it with a hammer at the sides.good luckHow do i remove rear brake drum?
porkchop its pretty easy on that car model. make sure you dont have the emergency brake pulled 1st, there is a possability you might need to back the brake pads off iff they are too deep in the drum likely not. using a block of wood and a hammer wrap the side of the drum in aprx 3 spots. the wood is to shield the impact to the drum. the drum will likely pop free and be easily slid off. a shot of wd40 around the round center will help a lot. be carefull and wear a dust mask when you do this as brake dust will fly around.

that should be a spring loaded tension-er. a simple pull with a 15 mm or a 38 drive ratchet will do the trick.with the tension off the belt. slide the belt off of a pulley that is not ribbed.

No, I use it when I am truly laughing at loud. For instance, last week you told some jokes that were not that funny but one of them made me smile so I did this.. :-)

I cant figure out how to put the belt back on my engine?

i had to change my alternator and i cant figure out how to put the belt back on correctly. 98 ford escort zx2 sport.I cant figure out how to put the belt back on my engine?
It's different for every car, so not many people can tell you exactly without showing you a diagram.

The diagram should be on the fan shroud. If not, it should be in the owners manual. If not, go to a used car lot and find a like car and draw your own schematic.

You may also get that info and all other repair info from your manual (Hayne's Repair man.) Costs about twenty bucks at your auto zone and worth every penny. Do NOT purchase Chilton's.I cant figure out how to put the belt back on my engine?
There should be a diagram under the hood somewhere. If you can't find it, check the owner's manual.I cant figure out how to put the belt back on my engine?
I can't be precise because i haven't changed one on that kind of car but usually all you have to do is loosen the alternator support bracket slide the belt over it and one or two other pulleys make sure they (the pulleys) are all in the same plane so the belt isn't twisted then hand tighten the support, use a tire iron and pull the alternator TIGHT against the belt and retighten the support bracket.

That should do it (use the tire iron for leverage its got to be real tight) some times the owners manual will have a picture of the belt and where/how it goes! (if you don't remember.)I cant figure out how to put the belt back on my engine?
Find your owners manual and from there locate your %26quot;belt tensioner%26quot;. You can ease the tension so replacing the belt is possible.

My passenger side window won't roll up. it's electric. its raining i dont think it has fallen off track . i really dont want to take it to a mechanic because i know they will charge me hourly to find the wiring throughout the car. i am a girl but i know a little bit about cars. i can change brake pads and a tire and i know how to change an alternator, i can sometimes tell whats wrong with a car by the sounds it makes (i have had so many) what should i do?Is there a place i can go to get a hand with fixing my car.?
If you can't help, just say you want the 2pts. and move on - but don't give lame advice. (You know who you are...)

Give me a minute and I'll see what I can do to help you - K? I'll be right back...

OK, this is the only website I have so far:

    http://www.misterfixit.com

it's not the best; you have to scroll thru a bunch of babble... but it might help for now, and it's free. :)

back again... i just went to http://www.google.com and typed in - I need to fix my cars electical windows - many things came up that might help you to fix your windows.

Another suggestion: the transportation dept. in your city... school bus mechanics, tour bus mechanics, taxi mechanics... some of these guys run fix-it-shops out of their homes and charge MUCH CHEAPER RATES than others.

High schools and colleges need cars to fix (for training their students) and are willing to do the work for free or next to nothing.

On LAFB there is a shop where the military guys go to play around, (their hobby) w/ cars, and they are always quick to offer their help/knowledge/insight. Great guys. There are also %26quot;car shows%26quot; here every weekend in the Library parking lot. Those guys LOVE working on cars/showing them off/helping you figure out what yours needs...

I hope something here has helped you.

God bless you Sweetheart. And good for you that you do your best to take care of yourself, and NOT let others take advantage of you! :)Is there a place i can go to get a hand with fixing my car.?

You can take it to a company that installs car windows. It doesn't have to be a mechanic unless it is an electrical problem. You don't really have much of a choice. Is there a place i can go to get a hand with fixing my car.?
Unless you know someone that would do you a favor like that the only option is to go to a mechanic. Yeah its expensive but you're not the only one with a car problem. Is there a place i can go to get a hand with fixing my car.?
Get one of those Chilton library books that show the repair drawings for your car. Check out the window mechanisms. If you can't hear the motor maybe a fuse has blown. If you hear noise and bumping the operator or gears might need replacement. If you hear the motor but no motion it might be the connection from the operator to the window. Are you sure it is still on the track - can you slide it up and down by hand? Good luck.Is there a place i can go to get a hand with fixing my car.?
I had a problem with my car regarding my driver side window not rolling up awhile back. I have power windows and I believe the motor is about to go. I went to my dealership and they gave me a little tip that you can try. If you have power windows, turn your car on, and while holding the window button (in the window going up position), use your fist and strike the door in a sort of upperward position kind of below where the handle to the door is (on the inside of the door). Keep holding the button and keep doing it until it rolls up. It worked for me several times and haven't had a problem with my windows again so far. Though it may not be a permanent solution, it might at least get your windows up in case it rains or so no one breaks into your car.Is there a place i can go to get a hand with fixing my car.?
You can try you Technical school they usaully have opening that they use your car for the student to work on and I think you get the parts for wholsale or something like that. You need to check with them. If you really want to get handy maybe you might think about taking class or two there as well.Is there a place i can go to get a hand with fixing my car.?
Some community colleges have a auto class and it is sometime free or cheap to have them work on it for you. The first thing you should do is check the fusees and make sure they are not blown. the next thing is with the switch on and the door open try movng the wires that go into the door. A lot of the time a wire willl short where it goes in the door.Is there a place i can go to get a hand with fixing my car.?
You did not specify what kind of location you live in. Around military bases especially there are cooperative groups. I forget their names. But it is part of the MWR, morale, welfare, and recreation. They have cooperative garages with bays with lifts, expensive items, lifts, pullers, etc. down to good tool sets. You can rent the tools. Along with the tools comes a knowledgeable person who can advise but not do the work. I have never seem them on the civilian side but I do not live near a large city. Your next bet would be a training site for mechanics. That would be a junior college trade school or high school shop class. They would have rules in the way though.

Now if you would actually join the National Guard or other branch of services, you could probably access the military base MWR garage. Is there a place i can go to get a hand with fixing my car.?
The best investment I ever made is buying a Haynes manual for your specific car. These manuals can be purchases at your local parts store. They average between $10 -$25.

Buy a cheap voltmeter and a general tool kit. You will be surprised at what you can accomplish and the money you save while doing your own repairs.

Buy about 10ft of wire. If the switch is bad you can hook one end of the wire to the +of the battery and the other end of the wire to window switch to get the window up for now. Most electrical failures occur because of dirt. Buy some electrical contact cleaner and spray it in the switch. It might help.

How difficult to change 96 Taurus Alternator? Info?Tips?

96 Taurus 3.0 - (163,000 miles) Was riding 24 miles to work, @ mile 17 all electric went dead, car continued w/ no power for 1 more mile until it died. Now will not start, run, ZERO power. Problem came out of the blue. WAS running fine prior. Questions. How do I determine problem is the Alternator.? or the Battery? or something else?

How difficult to change it myself. It looks TO easy to be true. I'm Fairly handy. Any tricks to make easier? Wud u go w/ Junker, Rebuilt or New? Thanks all.How difficult to change 96 Taurus Alternator? Info?Tips?
A rebuilt alternator is your best bet for replacement since they are cheaper than new, and come with a warranty, although normally if your alternator quit working your battery light would come on. You may have just a bad connection to your battery or fuse panel. Which engine do you have the 3.0 duratec (DOHC) or the 3.0 Vulcan (OHV) The duratec is easy to recognize since it says DURATEC right on the engine, or it say 24v DOHC.

If you have the OHV engine, disconnect the battery, then relieve belt tension (you can do this with a half inch drive breaker bar in the idler pully by inserting the drive into the square hole on the pulley and turning it away from the belt) Make sure you take note of how the belt is run cause it can sometimes be confusing. now disconnect the wires from the back of the alternator, unbolt the alternator, drop a new one in and reverse the process. Simple. Now you are gonna have to go play X-Box for a while so you can kill some time and convince your friends that it was a hard job.

If you have the DOHC engine

    1. Disconnect battery and jack the car up high enough to remove tire

    2. Remove tire and front fender liner to access bottom of alternator

    3. Remove engine control wiring from bottom. Note. do not try to remove another wire yet. That is power line to battery and it is screwed on alternator. It is impossible to remove it now

    4. Loosen the bottom blot of alternator

    5. Remove hood strut (optional)

    6. Move power steering reservoir aside (optional)

    7. Remove drive belt the same way you would if it were the OHV

    9. Loosen one bolt and one stud on top of alternator. Note. there is not enough room to remove them yet.

    10. Remove bottom bolt

    11. Turn around alternator to gain room to remove top bolt and stud and disconnect the power line to battery

    12. Here is the trick: Turn around alternator to let its pulley face inside so that you can slide alternator right out from bottom. With pulley face outside, it is impossible to slide it out.

    13. Reverse the process with your replacement alternator

Anyways, before going the alternator route, try a different battery in your car, if it doesnt start with a different battery, then you have problems with your wiring. My guess is that you have either a blown fuse or a bad connection somewhere. How difficult to change 96 Taurus Alternator? Info?Tips?
You can remove the battery and have it checked at Auto Zone. If the battery is OK, Auto Zone's web site has a %26quot;How To%26quot; section that explains how to replace the alternator. Just use the directions for how to remove the alternator then take the alternator to Auto Zone for a free check. If the alternator is bad, use the install section to replace it with a new one.How difficult to change 96 Taurus Alternator? Info?Tips?
It seems to be as yu described the alternator,

the belt may be tricky to doHow difficult to change 96 Taurus Alternator? Info?Tips?
have the battery tested, the alternator will not keep a car from starting, a dead battery will. you could have a blown fuse in there some where, and if you have nothing at all, it will be a large load fuse.

How I can find the difference between a 1999 Ford Escort zx2 1.9L and 1.8L Engine?

I am trying to change my alternator and I can't seem to find anywhere on the engine where it says 1.9L or 1.8L, it makes a difference in how I'm suppose to go about fixing the alternator. How I can find the difference between a 1999 Ford Escort zx2 1.9L and 1.8L Engine?
I don't think a 1999 ZX2 came with either engine. The 1.9L engine is a Ford engine that was used in Escorts model years up 1996. The 1.8L engine is actually a Mazda engine used only in the Escort GTs of that era. If it's a 1999 ZX2, it should be equipped with a 2.0L Zetec VCT engine. I wouldn't recommend attempting to change the alternator on that particular car yourself, unless you are fairly skilled, as it is very difficult to access on that particular model. Hope this helps.

I would like to give you some advice, unless you work on cars quite frequently have a mechanic install your alternator, the 24v Taurus is kind of tough to put an alternator on.

  • Do i need a new alternator and battery? what about wire?

I have a 2000 Ford explorer XLT and i have a 4000.1 amplifier hooked up to a RE audio xxx 12%26quot; subwoofer that is in a sealed. I currently have a pretty close to stock battery and also have another generic battery in the back. i am running the whole thing on about 5 gauge wire.

here are my questions and thanks again for the help!!!

what size wire should i run to power this setup?

    do i need to add/change another battery(s)?

do i need to change the alternator to a HO?

How/where do i find a place that will show me how to do the big 3 upgrade?

thanks again for the help!!!!Do i need a new alternator and battery? what about wire?
you do not say what brand amplifier you have but I am going to say that it doesn't put out anywhere near 4000 watts. if it did your amplifier would shut down from low voltage every time the bass hit. a true 4000 watts rms would probably set a 5 gauge wire on fire.

a 4000 watts rms amplifier would require two runs of 0 gauge wire, an H.O. alternator, 2 car audio style batteries and the big 3 as a minimum .

post the brand and model number of your amplifier and I could tell you more.

go to youtube and search for 'the big 3 ' . their are several videos to help you.

    Alternator or Battery issue?

Hello All, I tried starting my car last week and it wouldn't start. Car battery was 3 years old and i saw green deposits on the top. I tried jump starting the car (connected to the other car for more than 5 to 6 minutes) and still it wouldn't start. Whenever I started my car, the battery red indicator on the dashboard came on . The indicator was blinking yellow before jump starting, but then the yellow blinking went away after charging for 5 to 6 minutes (during jump start).

Changed the battery and cleaned the cables and it ran fine for 2 days. Today, it wouldn't start again.

    1. Please let me know if the problem is with the battery or alternator or any other part?

    2. How much does it cost to change the alternator (or if there is any other broken part)?

    3. In this hard economic time, I wouldn't be able to spend a lot of money. Sp please let me know the cheapest place where I could take it to fix it or could I do this myself?

    Appreciate your answers!!

Car is 95 Honda accord - 4cylinder.Alternator or Battery issue?
if it ran fine for 2 days and then wouldnt start again its a good possibility its the alt. take it to autozone or oriellys and they will check the alt for you free of charge and tell you if its bad or not. they can check it while on the car too.Alternator or Battery issue?
well when the battery gets low on power, your alternator is forced to work extra hard. so i would recommend replacing both. i would go to the junkyard and pull an alternator and install it on your car or go on craigslist and search for one. there are tons of honda parts on there for cheap. you could also look on there for a battery. but you'll probably have to go to an auto shop for that.Alternator or Battery issue?
I'd guess it's your battery that's shot, not your alternator. The easiest way to tell would be to get a multimeter and measure the output of the battery vs alternator. If while running the car gives an output of around 14 volts, the alternator is fine.

A battery (depending on quality an brand) will run anywhere from 60-150 bucks depending on what you get.

If you go to Autozone or any other major parts store or garage chain they will usually be more than happy to test your battery and alternator for you for free if you don't have a multimeter.

Another option is to start the car, and while it's running remove the negative battery cable terminal from the battery. If the car continues to run, your alternator is fine.

bottom line, i fyour car ran for several days on a charge, you're alternator is most likely fine. It's much more likely that the battery is just no good or your electrical system may have a slow drain on it that you need to repair.Alternator or Battery issue?
If your alternator is bad, you would see some problems after running it for a while, the alternator recharges your battery as well as run your electrical system while the motor is running...so if your alternator was bad, your motor would run until your ignition system used all the energy left in the battery.

You should be able to change out the alternator yourself, shouldn't cost more that $100 for a new one. Also: make sure all of your grounds are in good conditionAlternator or Battery issue?
Remove the battery, give it a full charge, have it tested by somewhere you trust.

If you need a battery, you'll know it right there.

This is a good place to start. If you want, and can ? remove

the alternator and have that tested.

Because of the cold weather approaching, I would imagine it is

your battery, but there are many, many variables here. It could

    be a combination of components.

So eliminate the possibilites what you can first.

    Good Luck to You...

Try to work with one place on this issue rather than run here and there for the best battery price.

ie. A Local Trusted Autozone ? or Auto Parts Store.

Make sure you have the battery charged, then tested.Alternator or Battery issue?
A voltmeter and some basic charging system knowledge can help to diagnose your problem. I'm not going to spell it out for you. You can help yourself through this hard economic time by doing some homework.Alternator or Battery issue?
What happens when you try and start the car?

New alternator problem or something else?

I just changed the alternator on my 2003 Escape, (w/ help o a friend en his tools) I still have some power Issues, w/ AC and Light on, I can see how the panel lights dime, and the AC temperature drops and fan slow down. If I push the gas it goes back to normal, but on the highway The Ac fails the same way. even if I push the gas.

Is there something else to check beside the alternator? any voltage regulator box or something? I bough the recommended alternator from checkers. could it be a faulty alternator? how can I test it? I'm getting:

    car off --- 12v

car on, no accesories, --- 13.5v to 14v

car on w/ AC, Hi Beams and stereo --- 13v

car on w/ AC, Hi Beams stereo and radiator Fan, 11V

when the fan turned off voltage went slowly back to 13v

there was no change on the voltage by increasing the RPM.New alternator problem or something else?
It might be a problem with your battery holding a charge sometime an alternator going bad can over charge the battery if you want to check the alternator take it to your local auto zone they will test it for free.New alternator problem or something else?
Have you an automatic tensioner on the belt. It could be bad, if you do not maybe your belt is too loose. try tightening it a little.New alternator problem or something else?
sounds like the voltage regulator but most are in the alternator. the place where you bought it can check it for you . also check if you fan belt is loose . that sounds more why it does that than the alternator cause like i said the voltage regulator is in the alternator usually but go back and have it checked after you check the fan belt firstNew alternator problem or something else?
If you are reading 12V across your battery terminals with the engine stopped that is low. You should be reading 12.6V or higher. Your alternator is doing it's job with the 13.5-14V at idle. Have your battery checked. If you need a new battery get it at the same place if it's still under warranty. They pro-rate the warranties. I just bought one and got $25 toward a new one. Good luck.

Clean up the terminals on the battery cables. Have the battery charged and checked at your mechanics shop. Put the battery back in the car, start it up, then connect a voltage meter to the battery. It should show from 11 to 12 volts before you start it. After you start the car,the voltage meter should show almost 14volts. If it doesn't move after you started it, the alternator needs checking. With the care shut off, the voltage meter should not show any loss of voltage. If it does, you need a new battery.Alternator or Battery?

jump start it an ddrive to any parts store or shop ask them to check charging system then you know for sure not reason to replace anything til you know for sure that wil save you money check belt clean cables jump start it then have it check smarter cheaper way than guessing buying what you dont need cost youAlternator or Battery?
if the light is on whin the car is runing its the alterator but if the battery is over 3 years old i would change it tooAlternator or Battery?
Hi: Step 1) take the battery out and have it tested at pep boys or some other car parts place. Most of them will test it for free.

If it fails replace the battery.

if the battery passes the test then it is the alternator.

    New battery about 100 bucks

new alternator, not much more, depending on the year, make and model of car.

Very easy to replace either one your self.

    russAlternator or Battery?
Disconnect the battery cables and clean them thoroughly. Reconnect them and jump start again if necessary. Drive the car for 20-30 min and see if it will re-start. If it still fails to start then buy a new battery. Always go with the cheapest fixes first.Alternator or Battery?
replace the battery and clean the battery terminals then tell me year, make and model and engine sizeAlternator or Battery?
that green stuff you see on the battery posts? get it off, that,s corrode and the alternator can,t keep your battery charged with that stuff on it. take the terminals off, clean them good and make sure they are tight. by the way after you get them clean put a little bit of grease on them, it will help keep the acid away.Alternator or Battery?
It's definitely your battery. If it doesn't start after jumping then it's gone. Get one at Walmart or Pep Boys or some large store. Use a small 1/2%26quot; socket wrench or open end wrench to undo the cable clamps and just drop the new battery in.

Alternators are pretty expensive, from $200-800.Alternator or Battery?
    1. if the battery had corrosion on the terminals, clean the terminals. the most likely cause is the battery.

2 replace the battery always first if it is a dead cell it will cause the alternator to struggle to charge a battery that is completely dead.

    3. use a voltage meter and postive lead to the battery pos and neg to the battery neg , if you see 14 volts while the car is running the alternator is charging.

4 alternaotrs are not that hard to change but you may need a hoist.

    5. your best bet for economic reasons is to change it yourself and go from there.

How to change a new beetle alternator yourself?

You really should take it to the dealer to get worked on. But, if you're confident enough to work on it, I would recommend getting a repair manual and follow the procedures exactly.

Bobsled is correct in saying you need the correct tension on the belt. Make sure you find out what that figure is from the repair manual. How to change a new beetle alternator yourself?
Not easy unless you have the right tools and experience. You are not only changing the alternator but also making sure that you have the right tension on the belt. Better to leave it to a professional... How new is the Beetle? Is it still under warranty?

Look for a square 1/2 inch hole or 3/8 maybe, if not put a wrench on the nut on the pulley at the tensioner and push inward. Sorry don't know these cars very well, but 1 of the above should work. good luckHow to loosen the spring tensioner on a 2001 chrystler concorde?

Can anyone help me with a vauxhall astra?

can anyone help me with instructions to change an alternator on this car. How do I remove the drive belt, and how do I tension the alternator. Details please. Thank you for any help. Can anyone help me with a vauxhall astra?
Im assuming the astra is either mk2mk3 or mk 4. In these cases it is all very similar.

    Firstly disconnect the battery,

Now look down at the alternator, there will be a 13mm nut and bolt running at the top of the alternator joining it to the mounting bracket, slacken this off.

There is also a 13mm bolt holding the bottom of the alternator, undo this and the whole unit will pivot allowing you to remove the belt, Refitting of the belt requires the alternator to be prised into tension using a suitable bar.

To remove completley, remove the two pre mentioned bolts, u can now turn the alternator enough to remove the 13mm live nut from the back, and also the 10mm battery warning feed. Refitting is just a simple reversal.

Hope this helps. Can anyone help me with a vauxhall astra?
Normally a bolt on the alternator adjusts the belt tension, and another bolt acts as the pivot. Removing those bolts will let you remove the alternator and belt. Can anyone help me with a vauxhall astra?

    Excellent advice from Sophi B!

In addition to this, when tensioning the belt check that you've got 10mm free play at the longest run before tightening the bolts.
